Feng Shui is the Chinese system of placing objects and using
color to positively impact the energy of a home or a business. The principles
of Feng Shui can also be used to enhance the energy of your outside living space
– your yard and garden. According to Feng Shui theory, the southern portion of
a yard or garden corresponds to the element of Fire. The southwest corner
represents the particular aspect of fire that is responsible for healthy
relationships. Your relationships, in particular your romantic relationships,
can be affected by what you put in this space.
What do you think of when you think of romance? Hearts and
flowers, the color red, and pairs of things most often come to mind. Red, pink,
and purple flowers are most appropriate for this spot in the garden. A heart
shaped crystal or a stone would be a great addition. Any garden accessory in
pairs is also appropriate – a couple of bird feeders, a pair of small garden
statues, or two hanging wind chimes. A metal bench or loveseat can further
enhance the romantic nature of your garden’s southwest corner.
If you don’t have a garden, there is no need to despair! You can literally invite the fire element into your life by placing your
barbeque, grill, or tiki lights in the southwest corner of your yard. A red
umbrella or flag, or two potted arrangements of red or pink flowers will
similarly act as a magnet for healthy romantic relationships. Cone shaped trees
or a gazebo with a pointed roof will attract beneficial fire energy if placed in
the southwest.
Things to avoid in the southwest corner of both your garden
and your yard include ponds or fountains, as the Water element is thought to
extinguish passion. Since the Wood element can act as a deterrent to romance,
wooden trellises and benches are better placed in other areas.
Incorporating the principles of feng shui into your garden
or yard can be done easily and inexpensively. For more information on this
topic, I recommend reading Nancilee Wydra’s book Feng Shui in the Garden.
